3 common Story Writing MISTAKES Writers make!

Hi everyone, it’s Phoenix here and today we’re going to go over some of the most common writing mistakes people make when writing stories.

Don’t write about A PLAIN WORLD.

This is a very common mistake writers make.

Readers want description. They want to be transported to a different world, a different land. Many writers write about a plain world with bland description. You need to think, and put yourself in the readers’ place. When you’re reading a book, what kind of descriptions make you see or feel a certain way?

RUSHING

  1. Don’t rush to publish your book, or finish it quickly. Take your time!
  2. Even in your story, don’t rush to get to the climax/ a part with a huge twist so quickly, or after the amazing part is over, your book will be to dull to read. Instead, build up the excitement in each chapter, leading up to the main twist.

FLASHBACKS

It’s okay to have a flashback in your story, but don’t make a huge mistake and overload your story with flashbacks. Readers like flashbacks, but some other mistakes you may make are:

  1. Making your flashback unclear. Unless you’re building up the tension, or going to reveal it later on, make your flashback as clear as possible.
  2. Making your flashback too long.
  3. Writing an unnecessary flashback. Flashbacks are fun to write, but if it’s not necessary, then don’t put it in. Readers can get tired of it.

So don’t put down the pen and don’t make these mistakes!

  13. Great writing tips. I remember recently almost binge watching an entire series from Netflix and stopping half-way through when there was an episode that was entirely backstory. It was unrealistic and unnecessary padding that pulled me out of the story. You are correct that the story doesn’t need to be complex in order to be engaging. It needs to be thoughtfully presented.

  15. I think flashbacks in writing can be tricky. It’s something that needs to be done well or not at all!
